The Ganges, probably the world’s most revered river, flows across the sweltering plains of northern India to the Bay of Bengal, but its source is high in the Himalaya, amongst the snows and glaciers close to the Tibetan border. This trek begins at Gangotri, one of the four 'dhams' or pilgrimage sites in the Garhwal Himalaya and follows a well-used trail through rhododendron forests and alpine pastures to Gaumukh, the 'Cow's Snout'. This is the physical source of the Ganges, where it emerges from the grey-blue ice of the Gangotri glacier. Shrouded in legend and folklore and flanked by an impressive concentration of 6000m peaks, it is here that the holy river Ganges begins its long journey to the sea. The setting and views are inspirational and there is time to explore this mountain wonderland as we climb to Tapovan, a high altitude meadow dominated by the distinctive towering walls of Shivling and the Bagirathi group of peaks. An unusual and fascinating trek into the heart of the Himalaya.
