This exciting high altitude trek takes us through the stunning mountain terrain of southern Zanskar and Lahoul into the heart of the Indian Himalaya. Hemmed in by the Zanskar range and the Great Himalayan divide, this mountain-locked area remains cut off by snows for half the year. Yet Zanskar is still home to some 10,000 or so hardy folk living a life that has altered little since Buddhism first reached the Himalayas over 1000 years ago. Our route starts from Darcha in Lahoul then crosses the Shingo La (pass) and continues north to the spectacular monastery of Phuktal, seemingly hewn from a sheer rock face. From here we turn south-east to climb the magnificent Phirtse La for unrivalled views across the Himalaya before descending to the Lingti Valley. On reaching the Baralacha Pass we follow the headwaters of the Chandra River to reach the emerald waters of Moon Lake or Chandra Tal. This must be one of the most varied treks in the region, along a demanding route that offers immense cultural interest as well as some of the most impressive views of the Great Himalaya and Zanskar Ranges.

Day 1 Start Delhi.

Day 2 Train to Chandigarh and drive to Mandi.

Day 3 To Manali by road.

Day 4 Drive over the Rohtang Pass (3978m) to Darcha.

Day 5 Begin our trek following the Barai river to Jankar Sumdo.

Day 6 Acclimatisation rest day.

Day 7 To Chumik.

Day 8 Cross the Shingo La (5090m) with views of the Great Himalaya.

Day 9 Follow the Kargyak River past the sacred granite monolith of Gumburanjan. Camp near Kargyak, the highest permanent settlement in Zanskar.

Day 10 -

Day 11 Through stark scenery to villages on a fertile plateau and visit Phuktal Monastery.

Day 12 -

Day 13 Continue back towards Tanze then along Phirtse Chu to a wide plateau below the pass.

Day 14 Cross the Phirtse La (5250m) for superb views of the Zanskar Range and Great
Himalaya.

Day 15 -

Day 16 Trek down the Tsarap and Lingti Valleys.

Day 17 Along the Leh-Manali highway to cross the Baralacha Pass (4950m). Camp near Topko Gongma.

Day 18 -

Day 19 Along the Chandra Valley to Moon Lake.

Day 20 Trek to Batal then return to Manali by road.

Day 21 To Chandigarh by road.

Day 22 Train to Delhi; end Delhi.
