Nestled between the great mountain ranges of the Himalaya and Karakorum lies the high-altitude desert of Ladakh. A resting point for travellers on the ancient trade routes to Central Asia and beyond, this is a Buddhist land more akin to Tibet than the lowlands to the south. Ladakh's centuries-old culture finds expression in the monasteries, monuments, fairs and festivals, and all departures coincide with monastic festivals. These are often the highlight of the year as the local communities celebrate with a feast of colour and entertainment. In contrast the landscapes of this mountain state are truly awe-inspiring with mighty snow-capped peaks towering over arid valleys, broken only by isolated patches of green fields where villages eke out a living against the harsh environment. There is water here, however, with the mighty Indus River forcing a way through the mountains on its way to the Indian Ocean and on the border of Tibet are the azure waters of Pangong Lake, visited by nomadic yak herders seeking summer pastures.

Day 1 Delhi.

Day 2 Fly over the Himalaya to Leh; afternoon walk through town.

Day 3 Hemis or Tak Tak festival or sightseeing around Leh including Shey, Tikse and Hemis.

Day 4 To Alchi via Basgo Fort and Likir.

Day 5 See ancient gompa at Alchi; visit spectacular village and monastery of Lamayuru; to Leh.

Day 6 Drive over the Khardung La, claimed to be the highest road in the world (5602m), into the Nubra Valley.

Day 7 Visit the beautiful villages of Sumur and Hunder and enjoy the awesome views over the desert and the snow-capped peaks beyond.

Day 8 Visit Diskit Monastery, the oldest in the fertlie Nubra Valley; drive to Leh.

Day 9 Phyang festival or sightseeing at Shey and Tikse.

Day 10 Drive to Tsokar Lake; via the Taglang-La and the Mori Plains.

Day 11 Drive to Keylong via Baralacha Pass (4845m).

Day 12 On to Manali, set amongst forests and orchards.

Day 13 Drive to Chandigarh, Train to Delhi.


	Accomodation 8 nights hotels/lodges, 4 nights camping. Transport: Bus and internal flight
