With valleys ranging from only a few hundred metres above sea level to some of the highest peaks of the Himalaya, the tiny state of Sikkim has an incredible range of flora and fauna. This trek is equally varied, passing through thickly forested valleys and tea estates to the alpine pastures beneath Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain. From our high base camp at Lake Samiti there is time to explore the surrounding glaciers and ascend the 4940m Goecha La, for superb views of the immense ice cliffs of Kanchenjunga’s south-east face. After the trek there is time in Darjeeling, the most spectacular of all the Indian hillstations, set amongst tea plantations and connected to the plains below by the famous toy train.

Day 1 Start Delhi. Rest of the day free for sightseeing.

Day 2 Fly to Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok.

Day 3 Sightseeing in Gangtok.

Day 4 -5 Drive to Yoksum.

Day 6- 7 Trek through lowland jungle to rhododendron and fir forest. Our first views of Kanchenjunga are at Dzongri (4030m).

Day 8 Trek along the ridges through scrub juniper and rhododendrons to Thangshing (3930m), where we have an acclimatisation day with a walk to Lam Pokhri Lake.

Day 9 Walk up through glacial moraines to our base camp at Lake Samiti.

Day 10 - 11 Trek to the Goecha La (4940m) for superb close up views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Return to Thangshing.

Day 12 Return to Yoksum via a different route through forest and jungle.

Day 13 Drive to Darjeeling and explore the town.

Day 14 Drive to Bagdogra and fly to Delhi.

Day 15 End Delhi.

Accomodation
Hotels, guesthouse, teahouses & camping. Obviously the standard of hotels and guesthouses will vary greatly and the more remote the location the more basic the accommodation becomes, this is all part of your challenge! Teahouse accommodation can best be described as rustic, you will usually have a small room, a bed and some blankets/ pillow. Some but not all have a shower of sorts, though access to hot water is limited. On some days you will just have a bowl of hot water to wash with. We ask for your patience, as at times things do not work the way you are used to at home.
